Classic and lovely, this antique brooch combines a wonderful classical portrait with an intricate filigree frame. The handmade gold frame is yellow, with layers of twisting rope and bead details. The ancient motif is carried over in to the lady's hair, with carefully carved roses. Particularly nice here is the ladies face, and her gentle eyes.

Cameo is the art of carving a layered material, creating a portrait or landscape with the difference in the colors. While traditionally done in shell, banded onyx has been used in cameo work - particularly in Greece and Italy - for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.
